Sermon Series Beginning November 17
Grateful: The Transforming Power of Giving Thanks
We are familiar with the ritual. We gather around the thanksgiving table and each person takes a turn sharing something for which they are thankful. Sometimes what is shared is simple, normal, and mundane. Other times it is quite profound. But when it is over we get on with eating and don’t think much about it thereafter.
Is this what it means to be grateful? Is this obedience to the biblical command to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)?
In this two part series we uncover the biblical virtue of gratitude, and begin to see gratitude as a disposition of one’s soul grounded in the grace of Jesus Christ. In the first part we learn the power of counting blessings as a way to resist our cultures temptation to adopt a mindset of scarcity and self-reliance. In the second part we talk about worry as a barrier to gratitude, and are enjoyed see the world through the eyes of faith as a means to a more grateful life.
